How Feeders and Hoppers Work

A feeder hopper combines a receiving bin (the hopper) with a metering device (the feeder) that controls material flow rate. The loader or excavator dumps raw material into the hopper. The feeder — typically a vibrating pan, belt, or chain conveyor at the bottom of the hopper — moves material out at a consistent, controlled rate regardless of how fast the hopper is loaded.

This regulated flow prevents surging and bridging in downstream equipment. A crusher or screen that receives a consistent, metered feed produces more tons per hour and experiences less wear than one that gets slugged with uncontrolled loads.

Common feeder/hopper configurations include:

• Vibrating grizzly feeders — separate fines from the material stream while feeding at a controlled rate
• Belt feeders — flat belt under the hopper for controlled discharge of fine or sticky materials
• Apron feeders — heavy-duty chain-driven pans for extremely abrasive or heavy material
• Hopper/agitator units — bin with a rotating agitator that prevents bridging in sticky or cohesive material

What to Check Before You Buy

Inspect the hopper walls and floor for wear-through, especially at impact zones where material enters. Check the feeder mechanism — motor, vibrator, or chain drive — for smooth operation and bearing condition. On vibrating feeders, check the springs and vibrator mounting for cracking. Verify the agitator (if equipped) rotates freely without binding.
