Types of Density Separators

Air Separators

An air separator uses controlled airflow to separate light material from heavy material. As mixed material passes through or over an air stream, lightweight contaminants (plastic film, paper, foam) get blown off while heavier material (wood, rock, aggregate) drops through. Air separators clean contaminated mulch, compost, and C&D streams.

Magnetic Separators

A magnetic separator removes ferrous metals from material streams using permanent magnets or electromagnets. Cross-belt magnets, magnetic pulleys, and suspended magnets pull nails, wire, rebar fragments, and other ferrous contaminants from conveyors carrying wood, aggregate, or recycled material.

Sink/Float Separators

A sink/float separator uses water to separate materials by density. Heavy material (rock, metal, glass) sinks to the bottom while light material (wood, plastic) floats on the surface. Each stream is collected separately. The Waste Wizard series uses this principle to clean contaminated wood and aggregate streams.

Ballistic Separators

A ballistic separator uses angled vibrating paddles to separate material by shape and weight simultaneously. Flat, light material (paper, cardboard, film) rides up the paddles while round, heavy material (bottles, cans, rocks) rolls down. Used primarily at MRFs and recycling facilities.
