Browse air separators for sale from Komptech, EDGE, and other manufacturers. An air density separator uses controlled airflow to remove lightweight contaminants (plastic, paper, film, foam) from heavier material (wood, rock, aggregate) in recycling, composting, and C&D processing operations. GrinderCrusherScreen carries new PRS air separators and used models from Komptech and EDGE. Call 770-433-2670 for pricing and availability.
How an Air Separator Works
An air separator creates a controlled air curtain or air stream across a material flow. As mixed material passes through the separation zone, lightweight material gets carried away by the airflow while heavy material falls straight through. The two streams are collected separately — clean heavy material on one side, light contaminants on the other.
There are several air separation designs:
- Cross-flow separators — air blows horizontally across a falling stream of material, pushing lights to one side
- Suction separators — a vacuum hood pulls light material up and away from a conveyor belt
- Pressure-suction systems — combine positive and negative air pressure for more aggressive separation (Komptech Hurrikan design)
Models in Our Inventory
New models include the GCS PRS and GCS PRS-W. The PRS is a compact system that mounts over a conveyor or screen. The PRS-W separates light material (plastic, paper) from heavy material in waste and recycling streams. Previously carried models include Komptech Hurrikan S, Komptech Hurrikan, EDGE MC1400 material classifier, and Komptech 3000 Stonefex. Inventory rotates — call for current availability.
Common Applications
- Compost cleaning — remove plastic film and light contaminants from finished compost before sale
- Mulch quality control — separate plastic, paper, and debris from colored or natural mulch
- C&D processing — remove lights from screened wood or aggregate in demolition debris streams
- Biomass fuel cleaning — remove contaminants before wood enters a chipper or boiler
Air Separators vs. Other Separation Methods
Air separators work best for removing light, flat contaminants from a heavy material stream. For removing metal, see magnetic separators. For separating materials that are similar in weight but different in density (wood vs. rock), a sink/float separator provides more precise separation using water. Browse all density separators.
What to Check Before You Buy
Inspect the blower or fan for balance, bearing condition, and impeller wear. Check the air duct seals and adjustments — air leaks reduce separation efficiency. Verify the separation chamber and material flow path for wear and buildup. Review power consumption and confirm the unit matches your material throughput requirements.
