How Mulch Colorizers Work
A mulch colorizer mixes liquid colorant with raw mulch using one of three methods: tumbling in a rotating drum, batch mixing in a tub, or spray application with a pump system. The colorant bonds to the wood fiber as it coats the mulch surface. The finished product is a uniform colored mulch — typically black, brown, or red — ready for bulk delivery or bagging.
Production rates vary by machine type. Drum colorizers run continuously for the highest volume. Tub colorizers process in batches for smaller operations. Pump-style systems spray colorant onto mulch as it moves along a conveyor, with no tumbling required.
Types of Mulch Colorizers
Drum colorizers are the standard for high-volume production. A rotating drum tumbles mulch through a mist of colorant for even coverage at rates up to 200+ cubic yards per hour. Best for operations producing thousands of yards per day.
Tub colorizers use a batch mixing process inside a large tub or vessel. Load the mulch, add colorant, mix, and discharge. Lower throughput than drums but smaller footprint and lower capital cost. A good fit for mid-size producers.
Pump-style colorizers spray colorant onto mulch via nozzles — no tumbling or batch mixing required. These systems integrate into an existing conveyor line and work well for operations that want to add coloring without dedicated mixing equipment.
