2005 CMI Biogrind 400

4,900 hours on a 2005 CMI Biogrind 400 — that’s roughly 260 hours per year on a 400HP horizontal grinder. That level of moderate use is paired with significant recent repairs and upgrades.

Who This Machine Is For

  • Recycling yards — processes wood waste into reusable material
  • Land clearing contractors — handles brush and light to mid-size material
  • Mulch producers — suitable for grinding and regrind applications
  • Operators looking for value — updated machine at a lower cost point

What It Grinds

  • Brush and green waste — reduces volume for hauling or reuse
  • Wood waste — processes pallets and scrap lumber
  • Small to medium timber — handles manageable material efficiently
  • Regrind material — suitable for secondary processing

This is not a chipper. It uses a hammermill system, so the output is ground material, not uniform chips.

Specs in Plain Language

This unit is powered by a 400HP Cummins engine. That level of horsepower places it in the mid-size production class, suitable for a wide range of grinding applications without being oversized.

With 4,900 hours over 20 years, you’re looking at about 260 hours per year. That reflects moderate use compared to machines running daily in production environments.

Approximately $25,000 has been invested in parts and service. Updates include a new clutch handle, batteries, pressure switch for feed belt reverse, feed roller shaft, and several hoses. The main pillar block bearing on the drum was replaced, and the lift cylinders and internal components of the concave system have been rebuilt.

This unit includes two remotes (one not programmed), which adds flexibility for operation.

There are some known issues. The exit belt pulsates, there is a tear in one belt, and the current screen is welded instead of bolted. The machine will need a new plate where the upper and lower concave meet, and under heavy load, those concaves may separate. These are items buyers should plan to address.

The CMI Biogrind 400 is a horizontal grinder, meaning it uses a controlled feed system for more consistent material sizing and efficient processing.

If you’re comparing options, you can also view other horizontal grinders or check tub grinders if your operation prefers gravity-fed loading.
